How to Copy and Paste

A Tutorial about how to Copy and Paste
Text From One Windows Application to
Another (Including Your Web Browser)

These instructions describe the simple process of copying a portion of a document from your word processor and pasting it into another application using your Windows clipboard. The ability to Copy and Paste to and from the clipboard is one of the most useful features in PC computing. It is a standard utility that works with most Windows applications yet many new PC users are not aware of it. The feature enables you to avoid retyping. It works with a single word, a sentence, a paragraph, or even multiple pages (as well as graphic images) depending on the particular applications.

  1. Begin by openning two applications, the one you want to 'copy from' (i.e. your word processor) and the one you want to 'paste to' (i.e. a web page in your browser with an online form).

  2. From within your word processor, highlight the text that you wish to copy by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the cursor down the screen. When you have reached the last line you want to copy, release the left mouse button. The text will remain "blocked."
  3. Click [Edit] on menu above the tool bar at the upper left side of the screen. Then click [Copy]. For a shortcut, simply press the 'Ctrl' and 'c' keys simultaneously. An identical result will be achieved with either action -- you won't actually see anything happen, but the text is copied into an area your computer's memory -- the clipboard.
  4. Next switch to your desired 'paste to' application. Either click the appropriate icon on your task bar or press the 'Alt' key, hold it down and tap the 'Tab' key until the appropriate icon appears highlighted and release both keys.
  5. Now, mouse click in the location where you wish the text to be placed such as in a form input field.
  6. Finally, to paste your text, just click [Edit] once again, then click [Paste]. For a shortcut, simply press the 'Ctrl' and 'v' keys simultaneously. The text you copied from your word processor will be pasted onto the screen. You can paste the text as many times you want because it is kept in your computer's memory until you copy something else or until you turn of your machine.
